Andre A. Scott, 30, of 114 Morgan St., was charged with possession of a narcotic. His bond was set at $250.
Officers on patrol in the area of 210 W. Main St. after 1 a.m. noticed a vehicle speeding away from the area, police said. They pursued the vehicle with lights and sirens on because of concerns about possible suspicious activity, police said.
Once the officers got behind the vehicle, the driver slammed on the brakes and put the car in reverse and backed toward the police cruiser, said Sgt. Robert Shawinsky.
Scott got out of the vehicle despite police orders to return to the car, Shawinsky said. Scott also was told repeatedly to take his hands out of this waistband, he said.
Officers approached Scott and "at that time they struggled with the operator who was combative and took him under control," Shawinsky said.
Officers detected an odor of alcohol, and the man told them he wasn't supposed to be in the car and that he and his girlfriend had just gotten into an argument, police said.
The K9 unit was brought in and a small amount of marijuana was found in the vehicle, Shawinsky said.
